Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht
Located in the city centre, the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU) is at the heart of the cultural and student life of Utrecht. With around 3,500 students, the Utrecht School of the Arts is one of the largest schools of the arts in Europe. The Utrecht School of the Arts offers Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes and research degrees in fine art, design, music, theatre, media, games and interaction and arts management.
Education
The HKU facilitates and stimulates talented and passionate students to develop as visual artists, teachers, musicians, designers, technologists, arts managers, writers and actors. We offers students intensive coaching and supervision. Courses have a tutor system. A tutor has an intermediary function between the student and the teacher and supervises the study process. In nearly all practical subjects, the Utrecht School of the Arts has adopted the studio-based system, in which (teams of) students have their own workspace and where they meet their supervisors.
Project offices at the faculty maintain contact with the business community, the government, the non-profit sectors as well as the media and cultural sector. These offices helps find commissions for students, giving them the opportunity to work in professional practice. Commissions range from graphics and architectural assignments to websites, CD-ROMs, installations, games, animations, clips, videos, films and concerts.
Students are given many opportunities to prove themselves in practice. You may use the school’s concert hall, theatre and gallery, professional studios and workplaces. In 2005 the HKU entered into a partnership with the largest university in the Netherlands, Utrecht University. One result of this partnership is the foundation of the Professional School of the Arts Utrecht (PSAU). For more information see http://www.psau.nl/.
Creative industry
Nowadays, artists are primarily creative professionals. They need to be entrepreneurs in order to reach their public and fulfil their mission. Creating extensive networks and cooperative links plays an essential role in this. In the Netherlands, this has led to the emergence of creative industries, cities and regions, where artists can find one another and look for opportunities together. In order to get your foot on the ladder of this creative industry, it is important to learn how to set up networks and start relationships with other artists and organisations during your studies. At the HKU, you will ample of opportunity to work with professional artists, the business community and intermediary organisations. Upon graduation you will be trained in an art discipline, but will also have taken your first steps on the road to becoming a professional creative entrepreneur.
The city of Utrecht
The city of Utrecht is located within 30 minutes from Amsterdam and a few hours from major cities in Europe, like Paris, Berlin and London. Utrecht has a rich history and is home to a great many monuments – ranging from Roman times through the Middle Ages to 20th-century architecture. The canals that are lined with wharf cellars and inviting terraces, old churches and naturally the impressive tower of the Dom cathedral add to the city’s ambience. Students make up a large part of the population of Utrecht, which offers all the facilities that could be expected of a true student city. Culture is important to Utrecht. Each year, more than 650,000 people visit the renowned museums, nearly a million visitors attend events such as the Blues Festival, the Netherlands Film Festival, the Festival of Early Music, the Festival a/d Werf and the Utrecht Design Biennial.
