History

For 40 years, NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences has been training students for management positions in the fields of Leisure & Tourism, Media & Entertainment, Hospitality & Facility and City Planning, Logistics & Mobility. NHTV is a modern and dynamic higher education institute with 6,500 students from over 50 countries.

Unique approach

NHTV was founded as an institute offering management programmes in tourism and leisure and in this field, it is the largest and leading education institute in the world. Our multimedia library has one of the most specialised collections in the world and our Electronic Learning System has made studying irrelevant of place and time.

International scope

NHTV is an education institute with a strong international character, constantly seeking to enhance this international dimension. NHTV is a member of various international professional organisations, including the WTO Education Council. NHTV was the first University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands to receive the TedQual Certificate from the World Tourism Organisation for its Bachelor programme in Tourism Management.

Centre of excellence

One of our main objectives is to make a substantial contribution to the development of knowledge. Apart from the two strategic Associate Professorships in Imagineering and Cross- Cultural Understanding, NHTV boasts several Associate Professorships in the disciplines mentioned previously. Imagineering is a new field of knowledge, aimed at the creation of memorable experiences in tourism, leisure, hospitality, media and entertainment. As such, it serves as a bridge between our various departments.

Our Master Programmes

1. MA in European Tourism Management

The Master of Arts degree programme in European Tourism Management (ETM) is a unique study programme with respect to content as well as presentation. The programme is organised and taught simultaneously by six leading tourism institutes in Europe: Bournemouth University (UK), Hochschule Heilbronn (Germany), H÷gskolan Dalarna (Falun/Borl„nge,
Sweden), NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences (the Netherlands), Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (Madrid, Spain), Universit‚ de Savoie (Chamb‚ry, France).  The programme is part of Bournemouth University's Tourism Masters Framework and leads to the award of Master of Arts from the British University.

The total programme of one year has three main parts:
The 1st part will take place in either Breda, Bournemouth or Borl„nge. All lectures during this stage will be conducted in English. According to the philosophy of the course, students are not allowed to attend the programme in their own country. After a one-week introduction period, a number of management-oriented subjects are taught until December: Tourism Principles & Practice, Business Strategy, Policies, Planning and Development in European Tourism and Foreign Languages.

The 2nd part, which runs from February till May, takes place in Heilbronn, Chamb‚ry, Madrid. Lectures will be conducted in the local language, i.e. in German, French or Spanish. Subjects which are taught are Marketing for Hospitality and Tourism, Managing Organisations, Research Methods and a European Tourism Consultancy Project (a major life case study for a tourism organization).

The 3rd part runs from May till September and gives you time to write a thesis.

After successful completion of the course each student will be awarded the official degree Master of Arts in European Tourism Management. The award ceremony will be held in the UK at Bournemouth University in November.

2. Master in Tourism Destination Management

The global dynamics of the tourism sector and its continuously changing business context are most visible at tourism destinations. Market power is shifting towards suppliers of tourism products and services at these destination areas. Competition between existing and new destinations is strong. Success of tourism destinations depends on the quality of its management, by private as well as public stakeholders. This Master course contributes to this, focusing on Practice, Perspectives and Polices of tourism management at destinations

The 2nd part (Feb.-May) will take place at three different types of destination in the Asia-Pacific: a mature (e.g. Bali), developing (e.g. Central Vietnam) and a major city destination (eg. Brisbane). The goal of phase 2 is to apply the accumulated qualifications of phase 1 to the research, advisory and managerial practice. Students will work in teams, taking the perspectives of different (types of) tourism stakeholders like large tourism companies, small and medium sized enterprises, government and non-governmental organizations.

In the 3rd phase (May-September) students are required to write a dissertation.

The Master Degree in “Tourism Destination Management” is officially accredited by the Dutch Flemish Accreditation Body, NVAO. Graduates typically are employed as consultant, strategic change manager, and engaged in new product and market development for tourism companies like hotels, airline companies, or related service areas like consulting companies
and destination management organisations.

3. Master in Imagineering

This Master programme has been designed to provide an expedition in search of new enterprise logic for organisations. We learn to see the world from today’s individuals’ perspective and accept the deep structural consequences to the business environment. This is the challenge of the expedition called ‘Master in Imagineering’. The expedition is made up of four academic themes:

Inspiration

The first term revolves around the changing societal reality and the strategic consequences for organisations of what is also called the creative economy. Using e.g. Appreciative Inquiry (AI) we will analyse a company’s DNA and translate ‘transaction thinking’ into ‘transformation thinking’. Output: appreciative diagnosis.

Creation

This term is about imagination and meaning, sense-making and sense-giving, creativity and design, generative metaphor and high concept. In a creative process the company’s DNA will be translated into a high-involvement experience concept. Knowledge and understanding of the creative process and management of creativity will be essential in this block. Output: experience concept.

Exploration

If we understand why and how to develop a new experience concept the focus changes to the transformation of an organisation. It is about creating an original business model focusing on new products, services, technology, logistics and networks. Output: experiential platform.

Organisation

The ongoing process of interaction with the new experience concept calls for new ways of organisation. In the final term we learn how to manage crucial elements like leadership, individual qualities and communication in an open-minded and non-hierarchical way. Output: organisation model.

Participants apply the course content to professional practice of their (application) company resulting in a written dissertation: The Business Transformation Report (BTR) including a practical inspiration guide. After successful completion each student will be awarded the official degree ‘Master of Imagineering’.

Application and Admission

If you want to apply for one of the above mentioned Master programmes, you should have successfully completed a Bachelor Programme in a relevant field of study. In addition, proficiency in English is required. Each Master programme has its specific additional criteria for acceptance.
