Global Business and Stakeholder Management
Globalisation, deregulation, privatisation, corporate responsibility, multinational enterprises, leadership, governance, emerging markets and the millennium development goals are the catchwords of the 21st century. Every day, newspapers cover the stories about these related ? but also highly debated ? phenomena. Studying these issues from the perspective of (international) business is the primary aim of this Master.
We are convinced that you will learn a great deal through our programme. In addition to gaining theoretical knowledge, you will enhance your managerial capabilities and improve your team skills. In this way, you will be equipped to make an excellent start in your career.
Three Dimensions
The GB&SM master takes a ?hard? approach to what many ? wrongfully ? consider as ?soft? issues. The GB&SM master is founded in a large number of disciplines and has a large number of perspectives. The ?Wheel of GB&SM? shows these perspectives. They can be brought under three headings:
1. Leadership: understanding trends in the world economy, the rise and decline of certain issues, and the related interests of stakeholders is a vital skill for any (future) leader. The start-up weeks of the GB&SM master will therefore deal with these perspectives, consider whether firms are a part of societal problems (like hunger, poverty, global warming), and examine how they can offer credible and sustainable solutions. You will learn how companies handle leadership and complex issues with their internal and external stakeholders.
2. Global Business: the actual management of international firms focuses ? next to operational skills ? in particular on how to manage on the interface of borders, laws, cultures and traditions. This dimension considers how firms can actively influence their international environment in interaction with governments, international organisations and representatives of civil society.
3. Stakeholder Management: whatever corporate leaders might want to achieve, they cannot do so without the involvement of stakeholders (either within or outside of the company). This dimension considers these stakeholders from two perspectives: corporate communication ? in particular with employees, NGOs and financiers ? and corporate governance.
The GB&SM master is strongly interdisciplinary, research- and management-oriented, and aims to train you in a large number of relevant skills that feed into various perspectives. Important research tools that will be given to you during the core courses are:
1. case studies
2. statistics
3. literature search ? making effective use of databases
4. analysing annual reports
5. interview and survey techniques
6. scanning techniques
Relevant management tools provided in this course are, amongst others:
1. negotiation and bargaining skills
2. argumentation skills
3. stakeholder dialogues and management
4. presentation skills
5. feedback
6. speed reading
