Strategic Management
Why Strategic Management?
This broadly applicable MScBA Strategic Management will help you open up new sources of managerial insights and competitive advantage compared to those who choose a more narrow, specialist approach.
Woul;d you liuke to find out:
- How firms and business units redefine boundaries and manage effective internation-alisation (make / buy, alliances, networking and physical versus virtual value chain)?
- How firm managers develop dynamic capabilities (unique resources, routines and core competencies) for strategic renewal?
- How firm managers develop and implement viable strategy configurations (aligning strategy, structure, systems and culture) for sustainable competitive advantage?
We produce tomorrow?s senior managers and leaders by delivering insights indispensable for answering the above sort of questions through an in-depth focus on three key manage-rial activities: Strategic Analysis, Strategy Formulation & Strategy Implementation.
Key features of the MScBA Strategic Management
- International Orientation. Virtually all aspects of this Master have a stimulating international flavor. Not only are the students from a wide range of backgrounds but also the teaching staff ? from scholars in the East (India, Israel & Pakistan) to Continental researchers (Belgium, Germany, Holland & Poland) to Anglo-Saxon academicians (Ireland, UK & USA). Not only are the course topics international (e.g., geographic diversification, global management & internationalisation strategies) but also career perspectives with multinational enterprises (e.g., ABN-Amro, General Electric & McKinsey)
- World-renowned Staff. On account of its staff members, the Strategic Management & Business Environment department is widely acclaimed as one of the leading Strategy departments in the world. The combined experience of its staff implies that the department is among the best in terms of cutting-edge research, student-centered teaching skills and incompany experience
- Practice Rooted in Scientific Knowledge. To ensure successful management of profit and non-profit organisations, this Master arms students with frameworks, concepts and tools rooted in rigorous theories and empirical evidence. Students are intimately familiarised with theories and empirical findings that could be used to frame, understand, analyse and act on challenges posed by complex organisations
Student profile
Our student is typically an ambitious, dynamic, intelligent and motivated individual who opts for a programme with both qualitative and quantitative elements, is eager to learn more, is very curious, possesses the ability to work long and hard and is able to combine the skills of listening to others with articulating his / her own take on things. Given our Department?s international orientation, an increasing number of students tend to be from out-side the Netherlands, resulting in an interactive, multi-cultural learning environment.
Core Courses
The Strategy Process
This course takes one through the evolution of strategy perspectives seeking to reveal how a firm can gain a sustainable competitive advantage. Participants take home not only vital new knowledge and insights, they also sharpen their skills in terms of analysing complex problems quickly, developing and articulating team-based solutions and defending their stance with skeptical peers bent on promoting alternative solutions.
Strategy & International Business
As firms internationalise and compete with global firms, they face a new set of dynamics and challenges. This course arms students with the newest scientific understanding and practical wisdom essential for deftly managing multinational corporations. The topical managerial issues addressed in this course include the determination of effective global organisation-structures, management of international value-chain relationships and international-business strategy.
Managing Inter-organizational Strategies & Networks
A range of environmental, technical and economic factors are driving companies big and small to form alliances and networks. This course prepares students for a promising business career by handing out to them frameworks and tools that enable the making of critical strategic decisions such as whether to compete or cooperate, how to choose alliance partners, which alliance governance-structures to use and how to coordinate partnership networks like Keiretsus and Chaebols.
Research Clinic in Strategic Management
All MScBA students are required to write a thesis that familiarises them with the method of science as a basis for not only examining and solving problems but also developing and applying managerially useful knowledge. To provide students a solid foundation for their thesis, the Strategic Management programme has pioneered the much acclaimed Re-search Clinic course. During this unique course, each student in close cooperation with one of the staff members prepares a Research Proposal, which eventually becomes the first chapter of the thesis and identifies the problem to be analysed, the goals of the investigation and the research design. Importantly, unlike other programmes, our students can expect not to be left swimming alone when preparing the Research Proposal as staff members are keen on helping students complete their thesis on time.
