Core courses
The MSc in International Management ? CEMS comprises five core courses. The courses ?International Strategy? and ?International Management & Organisation? are compulsory for all students. The three remaining courses, of which students should follow at least two, offer a deeper understanding of relevant functional areas. These include ?International Marketing?, ?Global Supply Chain Management? and ?Multinational Financial Management?.
International Strategy: From domestic company to global player
The first core course is about how firms internationalise and how multinational companies create and sustain competitive advantage in the international market place. Students learn how they (as future managers) can assist companies in their internationalisation process, for example, by targeting and selecting new markets, and by evaluating, designing and implementing entry strategies. In this course students will also develop an awareness of the potential issues and problems involved in the implementation of the internationalisation process, for example, in relation to host government policy, knowledge transfer, and interfirm collaboration.
International Management & Organisation: Gaining international competitive advantage through people
As organisations move from domestic to global business arenas, one of the key levers at their disposal in terms of achieving competitive advantage is the effective management of human resources. Managing international human resources and shaping the behaviour of a global workforce are complex and challenging tasks. This second core course is about these complexities and challenges, and how students (as future practicing managers), can understand and effectively leverage human talent in a global business setting.
International Marketing; Serving the global consumer
The first programme elective is an advanced course in marketing. In this course, students will focus on key global marketing strategy issues including global consumer behaviour analysis and company analysis. They also gain an appreciation of the basic strategic issues involved in segmenting markets, targeting markets and market positioning in the international arena. Students will learn how product development, pricing strategies, marketing communications, and distribution management, all need to be considered in order to successfully implement an international marketing strategy.
Global supply chain management:
Improving the multinational?s operations
Companies that move into new, international markets need to prepare their supply chain for this new challenge. Supply chain management has emerged as one of the major areas through which companies can gain a competitive edge. Managing supply chains effectively is a complex and challenging task, due to the current business trends of expanding product variety, short product life cycles, increasing outsourcing, globalisation of business, and continuous advances in information technology. In this programme elective students will learn how multinational companies deal with these challenges.
Multinational Financial Management:
What the CFO of a multinational company should know
Internationally-operating companies need to develop the expertise to evaluate and finance international opportunities. This requires a deep understanding of global capital markets, exchange rates, tax rules, and legal and institutional complexities. Financial management also includes assisting in international capital expenditure, acquisition decisions, and developing effective management control systems. This course provides an analytic framework for understanding how the financial management of multinational companies deals with these issues in order to create and sustain value across borders.
International Business Project
The International Business Project is a consultancy-based project in which students develop solutions and advise internationally-operating companies such as Shell, Reuters or ING on a specific business issue.
Electives
CEMS electives cover a broad range of subjects and are designed to enable students to broaden their knowledge in a chosen field and to help them prepare for their entrance into the world of international business.
Skills seminars
Skill seminars offer students opportunities to develop the skills they need for international business and are typically organised in close collaboration with CEMS corporate partners.
Languages
Strong written and spoken foreign-language skills are absolutely critical for effective management today. MSc IM-CEMS graduates need to be fluent in at least two foreign languages, one of which must be English (for non-native speakers), in addition to their mother tongue. Student?s linguistic abilities will therefore be rigorously tested.
Internship
The internship gives students the chance to convert their academic experience and theoretical knowledge into professional, multicultural experience.
Research clinic and Master?s thesis
All MSc in International Management students are required to write a thesis that familiarises them with methods of scientific research, as well as teaching them to analyse and explore theoretical and practical issues relevant to international management. As part of this trajectory, in the Research Clinic, students deepen their knowledge on how to conduct research, formulate and communicate their ideas and research, and develop time-management skills.
