Philosophy in Business Research (Research Master)
ERIM Master of Philosophy in Business Research (Research Master)
The ERIM Master of Philosophy in Business Research is specifically designed for academically talented and motivated students who want to have a research-oriented education in one of the domains of management. Five different specializations are offered:
- Logistics and Information Systems (LIS)
- Organization (ORG)
- Marketing (MKT)
- Finance (FIN)
- Strategy (STR)
The focus on recent developments in methodology and techniques, combined with advanced courses in each specialization field, makes this research master the perfect preparation for a successful PhD at a top international business school or for a staff position in a large company, consultancy firm or institute for applied research. A maximum of 30 students is accepted for the MPhil each year. This relatively small number of students allows substantial personal interaction between the students and their supervisors and significant customization of the educational program. The MPhil program is a two-year program, completely taught in English, and is offered on a full-time basis only. The academic year starts early September.
The Master of Philosophy in Business Research will be executed under the auspices of the Erasmus Research Institute of Management (ERIM), the joint Research Institute in the domain of management of the Rotterdam School of Management and the Erasmus School of Economics of the Erasmus University Rotterdam.
Curriculum
First-year MPhil students attend courses in their specialization field, combined with courses on research methodology, methods and skills that are shared with other specializations. Second-year students follow advanced courses in their field as well as advanced methodology courses, depending upon their needs and preferences. The program is concluded with a research master thesis under supervision of an ERIM faculty member. The total program adds up to 120 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System), equivalent to two years of 1600 hours.
Admission
The minimum entry requirement for MPhil students is a university Bachelor degree (BA or BSc). Students with a Dutch Doctorandus title may also apply. The program is open to top students from business and economics schools, but also from such fields as psychology, sociology and engineering. Only high-potential researchers are accepted for the program.
For admission to the ERIM MPhil in Business Research program, the following selection elements apply:
- A GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) or GRE test (Graduate Record Examinations) not older than three years is required for all students entering the program.
- Applicants are required to show proof of their proficiency in English, providing ERIM with either a TOEFL or IELTS test. The TOEFL score for the paper-based test must be at least 600 points and for the computer-based test at least 250 points. The minimum score for the IELTS test is 7.
In addition to these formal requirements, the Graduate Admission Committee bases the selection of students on CVs, academic references and interviews.
Career Perspectives
The main purpose of the MPhil program is to train students for future academic positions in research in management. Students who have completed this program will be very well placed to continue their research activities in a PhD program in business or management. Most of them are expected to enroll into the ERIM PhD program. Graduates who do not continue with a PhD program will have developed skills that will ensure the successful launch of a career in business, consultancy or applied research.
