Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam
Computional Economics
Mission
The aim of the master's programme, Computational Economics, within the MSc Informatics & Economics, is to train students in analysing complex economic problems from the finance, marketing, and logistics domains using computational modelling tools from the discipline of computer science. The modelling tools are intelligent techniques that have been developed in the fields of Artificial and Computational Intelligence.
Computational computer science offers a large set of recent modelling techniques based on both the algorithmic and storage capacities of computers. These techniques model the world in both quantitative and symbolic terms. Data, information, and knowledge are processed in many ways, using mathematical, logical, procedural and other operations, possibly implemented in agents.
Using computer power this way, it is possible to relax mathematical assumptions underlying the economic phenomena, bringing theoretical modelling closer to the practice. Furthermore, it is possible to execute simulations, to visualise data, to deal with non-stationary behaviour and to implement intelligent activities like (knowledge-based) reasoning, searching, learning, and communicating. In many cases this yields more transparent systems, i.e., systems understandable by ordinary people and domain experts.
Many problems in the area of economics are suited to analysis using the above-mentioned computational techniques. Current research efforts already lead to new terminology such as computational finance, computational marketing, agent-based economics, etc.
Audience
The master's programme in Computational Economics is aimed at students with a sound, academic training in economics and informatics.
Curriculum
During the one-year programme, students are trained to apply appropriate methods successfully. During the first trimester, two core courses will offer an overview of the available techniques, while two courses will widen one's knowledge in the application domain. The second trimester is designed to gain practical experience by working out a set of practical cases and to start working on the final thesis. The last trimester is completely devoted to writing the master's thesis. In many cases, the writing of it can be combined with an internship at a company.
The master's programme starts in September and lasts one year. All courses in the programme are taught in English. The student chooses a differentiation (finance, marketing or logistics) at the start of the programme.
Entry Requirements
This master?s programme is a so-called pre-experience programme, meaning that students holding bachelor degrees but lacking work-experience can apply for this programme. Students having a BSc in Informatics & Economics, Econometrics. Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering or comparable quantitative domain may apply. Students with a Bachelor?s degree other than Informatics & Economics need to have strong backgrounds in programming (such as Java), and need to have a basic knowledge in the area of Artificial and Computational Intelligence, and in one of the economic application domains.
For detailed information on the application and admission procedures of our master's programme we refer to the website of the Erasmus School of Economics
Job Opportunities
There is considerable demand for master's degree graduates with computational skills and experience in quantitative application domains such as finance, marketing or logistics. Graduates find jobs with companies and research institutes. Every year the Erasmus University offers fellowships to excellent students who want to pursue further studies for a PhD degree.
Possible career opportunities include:
- CRM consultant
- Supply Chain analyst
- Database Marketing consultant
- Financial Risk research analyst
- Business Intelligence analyst
- Researcher
