Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam
Economics (Research Master, M. Phil.)
The aim of the programme
The M.Phil. programme?s first year offers rigorous training in the core subjects and tools of economics. In its second year, students specialize in their choice from the institute?s many fields of research through field course work and M.Phil. thesis research. Students who perform well in the M.Phil. programme are expected to transfer to the three-year Ph.D. programme. Students in the Ph.D. programme typically spend most or all of their time on research.
Target Group (Master's Programme Profile)
Students must have completed (at the minimum) an academic bachelor?s diploma, preferably in economics, econometrics, mathematics or physics.
The TI programme is a selective programme. Only a limited number of students are admitted after a thorough selection procedure. Selection criteria are quality and aspirations of the students. Additional requirements: please see our website www.tinbergen.nl for the most updated admission requirements.
Curriculum
First year of the M.Phil. programme
In the first year of the M.Phil. programme students have to complete 60 ECTS of core courses in either the standard track or the advanced-econometrics track. The standard track consists of courses in:
- Microeconomics (20 ECTS)
- Macroeconomics and Asset Pricing (20 ECTS)
- Mathematics (8 ECTS)
- Statistics and Econometrics (12 ECTS)
Students with a sufficient background in econometrics replace Statistics and Econometrics with Advanced Econometrics (12 ECTS).
Second year of the M.Phil. programme
In the second year of the M.Phil. programme, students have to complete 30 ECTS of specialized coursework in their fields of interest. Most field courses are chosen from the extensive field-course programme of the Tinbergen Institute (over 25 field courses are offered in 2005-2006). In addition, some field course credits can be obtained by actively participating in the institute?s seminars. Finally, courses and workshops organized by other graduate schools or by inter-university networks such as the Netherlands Network of Economics (NAKE) may qualify for field credits.
The M.Phil. thesis (30 ECTS) is the final examination of the M.Phil. programme. The thesis is written under supervision of one of the institute?s research fellows. It should be suitable for submission to an international, peer-reviewed journal and may serve as the first chapter of the eventual Ph.D. thesis.
