Industrial Ecology / Environmental Studies
Industrial ecology is a relatively new field of science, which is rapidly gaining popularity worldwide. Industrial Ecology aims at the sustainable co-existence of society and environment. The central concept is the analogy between natural and technical systems. In practice, Industrial Ecology is a multi-disciplinary field of science in which engineers and natural- and social scientists are jointly looking for solutions for environmental problems.
Erasmus University Rotterdam, Leiden University, and Delft University of Technology have launched a joint Master Programme Industrial Ecology in September 2004.
The scope of Industrial Ecology is quite broad. The students must obtain insight in the interdisciplinary character of Industrial Ecology and specialise in a technical, natural or social scientific discipline. The technical science part consists of knowledge on technical production, consumption, recycling and waste processes. The social science part consists of knowledge on the economy, organisational sociology, social behaviour, business management and decision making processes. The third branch of Industrial ecology, the natural science part, consists of knowledge on environmental processes, ecology and the properties, behaviour and cycles of substances.
The programme is intended for students with a Bachelor degree in any of the Social, Natural or Technical Sciences and with a clear interest in issues of sustainability and sustainable development. This young scientific discipline, in which the sustainable relationship between environment and society is the core issue, is especially suited for a multi-disciplinary and inter-university programme.
