Mathematics and Science Education

The aim of the programme of study is to train you, our student colleague, to become an expert in innovation processes of mathematics and science curricula at all levels of education, with emphasis on the integration of ICT and on developing and updating your communication skills. To do this successfully, our master's programme must build on and add to your own background and experience.

The whole master programme contains two years or four semesters. Each semester is separated into two periods of 8 weeks and one of 4 weeks.
Courses at the AMSTEL Institute are collaborative enterprises conducted in a friendly atmosphere on a basis of sharing of ideas among the staff and the students. Students gain knowledge through a process involving discussion, comparison, critiquing, and analysis.
Student colleagues are introduced to modern pedagogy, research, and education materials from a selection of different countries. Teaching and learning materials from participants? home countries are an integral part of the coursework and the research projects. Students are encouraged to find and use relevant examples from their countries to complete assignments, and to contribute international articles, materials, and activities in their spheres of interest. For the latter, they are directed to the Internet and other sources.
Course and examination activities are based on shared experiences of programme staff and student colleagues; the activities emphasize the international character of programme participants as well as their areas of discipline.
Students who wish to complete the two years? MSc programme ? International Stream must choose the compulsory courses. MSc. students are urged to contact the coordinator of the Master in Mathematics and Science Education programme as soon as possible to plan the optional courses. The main research training starts in semester 2 with the Research Methodology course which is part of the master research project (40 EC). Research may be done at the AMSTEL Institute, but international students are encouraged to do their research in their home country. The research project is completed with a master?s thesis and an oral presentation.
The Programme is open to applicants with a bachelor's degree [BSc], or equivalent, in any mathematics or science discipline: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Science, Mathematics, Physics, and so on. A demonstrated interest in education is essential. A teaching degree or experience in education is an advantage.Among other things, IMMSE prepares you, our student colleague, when you return to your own culture to
