Philosophy (research master)
The Reseach’s Master’s Degree programme is open to excellent students, who want to specialize in scientific research. This two-year programme is a joint initiative of Tilburg University and Radboud University Nijmegen. The research of the Faculty of Philosophy of Tilburg University focuses on humanities.
The teaching activities are closely affiliated with the research programmes of the faculty on the three subdisciplines of philosophy: theoretical philosophy (in the continental tradition as well as in the analytical one), practical philosophy (including philosophy of law) and history of philosophy. During the programme, students will attend four research seminars, of which three should relate to the chosen specialization subject. Temporary visits to a suitable foreign research group will be encouraged.
The Mphil in Philosophy programme takes two years (120 ECTS in total). The set-up of the Master’s takes into account a balanced division of courses and research, divided over both years of the programme. The proposed courses in the first year of the Research Master’s Degree programme are a general training programme. In the second year, the courses are intended to contribute to the research group in whose field students is specializing. The curriculum consists of the following five components:
- Design and methods of philosophical research (18 ECTS)
- two Master’s seminars (18 ECTS)
- four research seminars (36 ECTS)
- two research papers (9 + 30 ECTS)
- skills training (6 + 3 ECTS).
Bachelor's degree in Philosophy, an average score of 7,5 for courses in the second- and third-year bachelor's programme and a score of at least 8 for the Bachelor's Thesis.
The primary goal of the two-year Mphil in Philosophy programme is to train academic researchers, for instance in order to prepare a PhD thesis. But, the programme will also cater for the demand for graduates with basic research skills for positions in the public and private sectors.
